David Hanlan started the original family stone masonry business back in 1988 after working for Roger Clemments building Cornish walls on the Penzance bypass here in Cornwall.
While David was working for Roger his son William Hanlan also started working as a stone mason, at which point David then started his own small business building cornish walls in his local area of Penzance.
David and William worked together in the family business for several years and in 1996 David decided then it was time to put the tools down and retire and so he left his business to William.
William continued working around Cornwall with a group of masons building thousands of meters of Cornish walls. A few years later William started to sub contract work and continued to do work such as building masonry walls around the then new Lidl Supermarket in Hayle and putting the granite stone facing on the St Ives Leisure Centre.
Other work that William carried out during this time included building Cornish walls for the National Trust around many of the old tin mines in the Cornish area.
In 2008 William’s son Ben started working one or two days a week until he finished school and then officially joined the business as a labourer and learning the trade. Ben briefly worked for other local stonemasons to learn different types of stonework, and now the family business is passed to him – B.H Stonework – working on all types of stonework.
The Hanlan family has been in the masonry trade for long time now and has a great deal of experience and many very happy and satisfied customers and contractors. William and Ben continue to work together in the family business, with Ben taking on the bigger jobs but with William’s help and experience.
